OMG this was the thorn in my side during most of my pregnancy. Why is it happening?Mainly due to the two pregnancy hormones Progesterone and Relaxin. Progesterone causes the stomach to empty more slowly after you eat. Relaxin calms or relaxes the smooth muscle in your body. Which means the muscles that keep the food in your stomach are loosened and instead rise up into the esophagus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The esophagus has a more sensitive lining compared to the stomach lining and so you feel the burn.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Other things that might cause it are:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌶Spicy foods ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😦over eating⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍳fried foods, highly processed meats⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍾fizzy drinks⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍋citrus fruit and juices⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍅tomatoes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
😫stress⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does it feel like?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤦🏽♀️Burning sensation in your throat⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤦🏽♀️A rising burning feeling⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤦🏽♀️Pain in your chest⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤦🏽♀️disgusting taste in your mouth- acid/sour/yukky⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In my case my symptom was also a hacking cough.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tips to cope with it are:
Avoid napping/sleeping lying flat, prop your head up.
Eat smaller meals.
Drink lots of water.
Don’t go to bed immediately after eating
Be mindful of your posture.
Bending over and slouching will cause it too.
Speak to your doctor about safe antacids or other solutions.
